The name "Obsidian" seems to come from Obsidius, a Roman explorer who found some black stones in Ethiopia which he called "lapis obsidianus".
Pure obsidian is a very dark colour. Among Mayan and Aztecs, obsidian had more value than Gold.
Its first use dates back to about 700,000 years ago, while the remains of a precise and expert workmanship date back to the fifth millennium BC.
